It always amazed me how these hugely dominant contemporary designed apartments in Southwark were given permission to build right behind these beautiful alms houses. These Grade II listed Hopton Almshouses were built between 1746-49 for the poor men of good character in the area. These days they are a retirement home for 20 older residents and come with a large garden, which is an oasis in this urban metropolis. I've actually grown to love the contrast between the contemporary and the old architectural designs.
