Maybe we are seeking refuge in the comfort of traditional values and aesthetics. This genre has been around since the Ancient Greeks (think Arcadia), but in the 21st Century it is more a reflection on a more wholesome period in time, even though that time might never have existed, at least for most people.
As the days become shorter and the nights longer, Cottagecore has become darker. We are now entering into the world of Dark Cottagecore, Gremlincore and Goblincore. This has been described as Cottagecore for people who actually want to be at one with nature and is more attuned to those aspects of nature deemed ugly and scary.
