How Life Is Beautiful started

Life Is Beautiful launched in September 2013, founded by Rehan Choudhry as a music, art, food, and ideas festival built directly into downtown Las Vegas rather than on a fairground or a strip lot. The inaugural lineup was headlined by The Killers and Kings of Leon, and the pitch was different from the outset: take an underused stretch of downtown, cover it in commissioned murals and installations, and use the festival as a way to bring people into a part of the city the Strip crowd rarely saw.

That civic-minded angle stuck. Over the next several years the footprint grew to roughly 18 city blocks, with an estimated 280,000 square feet of sod laid down each year to turn parking lots and side streets into festival ground.

The peak years: art, food, ideas, and headliners

By the late 2010s, Life Is Beautiful had become one of the more ambitious festival brands in the country, and not just on the music side. A few things set it apart from a standard festival lineup:

The art program brought in large-scale murals and installations from working street artists, most famously Meow Wolf's "Art Motel" in 2017, a walk-through installation built inside a full motel structure. The culinary program, run by chef and culinary director Lee Flint, pulled in names like Jose Andres and Cat Cora for a "Vegas Uncork'd"-style food element that ran alongside the music. A speaker series called "Ideas," running from 2015 onward, hosted a wide mix of guests including Bill Nye, RuPaul, and Karamo Brown. A dedicated comedy program added stand-up sets from acts including Pete Davidson and Michelle Wolf.

The music side grew just as ambitious. 2014 brought Foo Fighters, Skrillex, and Arctic Monkeys; a 2015 partnership with Insomniac Events pushed the electronic side further with Porter Robinson and Knife Party; 2016 headliners included J. Cole, Mumford and Sons, and Major Lazer; and 2017's lineup - Gorillaz, Chance the Rapper, Muse, Lorde, and Blink-182 - is still one of the more eclectic bills the festival ever ran. By 2018, The Weeknd, Arcade Fire, and Travis Scott were headlining.

By 2019, the festival was reportedly generating around $17.7 million in direct revenue, with organizers citing a five-year economic impact on the Las Vegas area north of $185 million. Attendance in these peak years is estimated at more than 180,000 people. Like most major events, Life Is Beautiful did not run in 2020 due to the pandemic.

The pandemic pause, and two more big years

The festival came back in September 2021, and organizers were explicit that it wasn't a given. Festival director Lauren DelFrago said at the time that the team felt "a heightened sense of responsibility to our staff, partners, performers, and attendees" in bringing it back, and CEO David Oehm called it a chance to welcome fans, artists, chefs, speakers, and creators back to downtown after a year away. The 2021 lineup leaned harder into hip-hop and pop than earlier years, headlined by A$AP Rocky, Young Thug, Billie Eilish, Green Day, and Tame Impala, with HAIM, St. Vincent, Brittany Howard, and Ludacris also on the bill.

The festival then ran at full scale for two more years. Penske Media, Rolling Stone's parent company, acquired a controlling interest in the festival in February 2022, and that September's edition still drew a major, genre-spanning lineup headlined by Arctic Monkeys, Calvin Harris, and Gorillaz. 2023 turned out to be the last full-scale edition: The Killers, who'd headlined the very first festival back in 2013, returned to headline again a decade later, alongside Kendrick Lamar, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The 1975, ODESZA, and Flume.

The 2024 rebrand, and what the numbers showed

The drop-off, when it came, was sudden rather than gradual. In 2024, organizers didn't run a full Life Is Beautiful Festival at all - instead they staged a scaled-down, one-day-shorter version rebranded as "A Big Beautiful Block Party," held September 27-28, 2024, with a lineup of roughly 14 artists across two stages headlined by Justice, Peggy Gou, and LCD Soundsystem. That's a fraction of the multi-genre, multi-day booking the festival had run every year since its 2021 comeback. Organizers framed it at the time as a way to keep the annual tradition going while the event was reworked.

The scale-down showed in the numbers. Later reporting put attendance at the 2024 Block Party at around 7,000 people, against the 180,000-plus the festival drew in its best years - and against lineups just one and two years earlier that were still pulling headliners like Kendrick Lamar and Arctic Monkeys. Online, longtime attendees have their own theories about what changed - some point to the festival feeling more mainstream and less eclectic as it scaled up and signed with a national media company, others tie it to the 2020 death of Zappos founder and downtown Las Vegas investor Tony Hsieh, whose real estate holdings were sold off in pieces by his estate in the years after, which some fans believe made the original festival footprint harder to secure. These are fan theories from community discussion rather than confirmed reporting, but they're a consistent thread in how people talk about the festival's decline.

Where things stand for 2026

As of this writing, neither the full Life Is Beautiful Festival nor A Big Beautiful Block Party has a confirmed date for 2026. Coverage citing Vegas.com and the Las Vegas Review-Journal describes the festival as being on indefinite hiatus, with its website taken down and no return planned until Rolling Stone and Penske secure a permanent downtown Las Vegas property to build it around again. None of the usual comparisons are a direct continuation of Life Is Beautiful, and none of them are downtown either, but they're worth knowing the actual timing on if you're chasing a similar Las Vegas festival experience. The Downtown Las Vegas Events Center is the closest thing to an active downtown festival venue right now, running concerts, watch parties, and events through 2026. Electric Daisy Carnival already ran its 2026 edition at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in May, with the next one set for May 2027. When We Were Young Festival, meanwhile, is on a confirmed hiatus for 2026 and is expected to return in 2027. Worth checking current listings before planning around any of them, since festival calendars shift.

The Downtown Vegas look, without the festival

Life Is Beautiful's biggest lasting mark on the city isn't a lineup, it's the Arts District itself - the murals, the street-level installations, the after-dark energy that the festival helped build a reputation around long before Rolling Stone ever got involved.
