Neon City Reckoning
The Stairwell Light
The service stairwell behind Neon City Arena has a light that never settles. It buzzes like something trapped, flares too bright, drops into a sick half-glow, then steadies as if embarrassed by its own indecision. Blitz Vector stops beneath it without quite knowing why. Some places demand acknowledgment.
On the concrete step lies half a clear zip tie, snapped clean through. Small. Ordinary. Meant to hold something in place. Blitz nudges it with his boot. It skitters toward the shadow and disappears. The light flickers once, sharply, then resumes its low hum.
He exhales and steps into the corridor, where the walls have been scrubbed pale from years of poster glue and disinfectant. The building smells awake. Synth Knight is already there, posture straight, mask immaculate. Thunder Jack leans against the wall, shoulders tight, jaw set like weather held back by force. Wildbyte stands a little apart, head tilted, listening not to the room but to the lights above it.
Story Beat - The Light Remembers
Synth: "You’re early."
Blitz adjusts the folded jacket over his arm. The neon piping is dulled now. A repaired seam runs along the shoulder, barely visible.
Blitz: "Early is when the building tells the truth."
Thunder Jack: "Truth doesn’t sell well here."
Wildbyte’s eyes track the overhead strip lights as they pulse from cool white to warmer tones.
Wildbyte: "The lights sound wrong tonight. Like they’re remembering."
No one asks what they mean. They all remember. They don’t talk about it as a mistake. They talk about it as Neon Smash Rally - a charity show, an off-site venue, a crowd packed tight in glow gear and cosplay, hungry for something loud and bright and reckless.
The lights that night did not simply fail. They hesitated. Uneven illumination. A strobe out of rhythm. A panel sparking just long enough to lie about depth and distance. The show kept moving. Someone who was never meant to be part of the story stepped into the wrong place.
Aftermath - The False Finish
Afterward, the city did what it always does - it tightened its hold. The story became a technical issue. An unfortunate glitch. No one’s fault. And what actually happened took on a private name that never sounds private once it’s said aloud. They call it the False Finish.
