There Be Dragons South of the River!

Do you live in South London? There are many reasons why South London is the best London area to live in. From the cricket at Oval to Mardi Gras in Brixton to strawberries and cream at the tennis in Wimbledon. If you follow the Northern Line south from Waterloo you come out in gorgeous green spaces, such as Morden Hall or Clapham Common (check out this great blog on South London Parks for more). There is no end of diversity, from Tapas in Elephant and Castle to bear baiting in Southwark...

There Be Dragons South of the River!

I'm only joking about the bear baiting, but it was only a few hundred years ago when this was going on (you can find out more about Southwark's incredible history by reading my blog on the Top 5 Free and Weird Places to visit in Southwark). Southwark was a scary place to be and one for all sorts of of wanting behaviour. It was also a very poor area, and a lot of the worst destitution was recorded here by Dickens (find out more about the Dickens-inspired street names of Southwark). These days Southwark is one of my favourite areas to be. You only need to mention the Shard, Tate Modern and Borough Market to make my point! In fact there has been a market at Borough Market for over a thousand years.

The further south you go, the leafier it becomes. Try places like Kingston or Richmond for some beautiful South London river life. Hampton Court too is a history buff's dream. Interesting fact, did you know that there used to stand a very impressive court owned by Henry VIII just opposite Borough tube station?

So if ever you are south of the river, as they say, come venture, grab yourself a south of London map and you will love it!
